Breastfeeding support at Mater Mothers' Hospital

Mater Mothers' Parenting Support Centre is here to support you throughout your breastfeeding experience.

Our breastfeeding support service is a specialist service within the Mater Mothers' Parenting Support Centre, available during your stay at Mater, as well as a support for you after you return home. The service is managed by qualified lactation consultants who are experienced in caring for newborn, preterm and special needs babies up to the age of six months.

Support during pregnancy

Individual consultations with a lactation consultant to discuss previous breastfeeding difficulties can be arranged, if required.

Support after the birth of your baby

The experienced midwives caring for you and your baby, in each postnatal unit, are able to provide you with breastfeeding information, assistance and support.

Breastfeeding information sessions and group feeding clinics are held by lactation consultants from Monday to Saturday, in the postnatal units. Please ask your midwife or nurse to direct you to the venue closest to you. Individual consultations are available for complex breastfeeding problems.

If your baby is in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU), the lactation consultant will visit you and your baby in the nursery.

Following discharge

If you require further assistance once you are at home, please contact the Mater Mothers' Parenting Support Centre via 07 3163 2299 for an individual outpatient appointment for breastfeeding issues and concerns with one of our specialists.
