About Mater SafeQuest

Mater Health Services is committed to our Mission to meet the health care needs of the community. This means we always seek to provide the highest standard of care, look for better ways to deliver health care, improve people’s health and live up to our core values of Mercy, Dignity, Care, Commitment and Quality.

SafeQuest   is a combination of safety initiatives, risk management strategies and communication programs designed to address priority issues and build on the culture of safety across the entire Mater community—including staff, patients and visitors. Through SafeQuest, Mater aims to achieve zero preventable harm for patients, staff and visitors. 

There are six core features which underpin SafeQuest

How does SafeQuest work?

As you walk through Mater's facilities, you will notice various reminders about SafeQuest and the organisation’s commitment to safety. These reminders are for everybody and help us all to keep safety on the agenda.

By working together and helping each other to be safe we believe we can change healthcare for everybody.

At Mater, we want everybody to be involved in safety and ask all our staff to:

  • Remind people to act—Speak Up For Safety
  • Get involved—advocate for and participate in specific safety initiatives
  • Be vigilant—keep safety at the forefront of everything we do
  • Promote reporting of incidents and team collegiality.

As a part of Mater's community, you have an important role to play in ensuring the highest safety standards for everybody. Whether you are a visitor, a patient or a member of Mater staff, you can influence the way we do things at Mater, and we welcome your commitment to SafeQuest.

SafeQuest initiatives

As SafeQuest develops, you will see information about a range of specialised safety initiatives which affect different parts of our organisation in different ways. All of these initiatives are underpinned by an organisation-wide commitment to SafeQuest and all of them have unique targets and goals which contribute to Mater’s continuous improvement.

As part of SafeQuest, Mater has taken the challenge to focus on the following areas:

  • Hand Hygiene
  • Medication Safety
  • Falls Prevention
  • Clinical Handover
  • Pressure Injury Prevention
  • Recognition and Response to Deteriorating Patients
  • Venous Thromboembolism Prevention
  • Blood and Blood Transfusion Safety
  • Patient Identification and Procedure Matching.

As SafeQuest develops, we will continue to develop and enhance our programs to have greater impact across broader areas.

SafeQuest—for a safer Mater community exists because of a commitment for Mater people to deliver on our Mission. It began when CEO Mater Health Services Dr John O'Donnell and Mater's Board of Directors challenged us all to commit to developing a culture of safety which pervades the entire organisation and provides a safe environment for all.

As an organisation, Mater is committed to developing and enhancing SafeQuest to become an all-encompassing program of safety which we hope will improve the standard of care.
