Colonoscopy: PicoPrep® bowel preparation

Follow these instructions for a MORNING procedure

The following instructions give a step by step guide to prepare your bowel for your procedure using PicoPrep® (Contains 3x 15.5 g sachet).

       days before procedure       /      /      

  • Commence Low Fibre Diet (see ‘Colonoscopy – Patient information’ booklet for diet suggestions).

  • Movicol® instructions:                                                                                                                         
  • Mix each sachet in 125 mL water. Do not take any further Movicol® once you have started taking the bowel preparation.

Day before procedure:       /      /      

  • Prepare the PicoPrep® solution by dissolving the contents of each sachet separately in 250 mL (approximately 1 full glass) of warm water (to total of 3 glasses). If preferred, this can be refrigerated for 1-2 hours before you need to drink it.
  • Breakfast: have a low fibre diet. Meals after breakfast are to be clear fluids only. (see ‘Colonoscopy – Patient information’ booklet for diet suggestions)
  • Commence drinking the PicoPrep®. Remember not to take any further Movicol®. Note: after drinking each prepared glass of PicoPrep®, drink 1 glass of water and 250 mL of clear fluid every 15 minutes for an hour.
    • 5 pm–6 pm: Drink glass 1 of the PicoPrep® followed by 1 glass of water and 1 litre of clear fluids.
    • 9 pm-10 pm: Drink glass 2 of the PicoPrep® followed by 1 glass of water and 1 litre of clear fluids. This extra fluid is to maintain adequate hydration.
  • Sip on clear fluids while you are drinking the PicoPrep® to keep you hydrated.
  • At bedtime set your alarm for 4 am.

Day of procedure:       /      /      

  • 4 am–5 am: drink the final prepared glass of PicoPrep® followed by 1 glass of water and 1 litre of clear fluids until 6 am.
  • Morning medications can be taken with a sip of water at 6 am.
  • 6 am: stop drinking ALL types of fluid. Chewing gum and sucking lollies is also not allowed so that the bowel can be completely empty.
  • Arrive at Day Procedure Unit, level 5, Mater Hospital Brisbane at 7 am to be admitted for your procedure.

  • Follow the instructions for regular medications
