Colonoscopy: PicoPrep® bowel preparation

Follow these instructions for a MORNING procedure

Your preparation kit:

  • Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax), which contains:
  • 3x 15.5g Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) sachets)

Optional:  Macrogol (Movicol) x ___ sachets

Commence Low Fibre Diet (see ‘Colonoscopy – Patient information’ booklet for diet suggestions).

Macrogol (Movicol) instruction:

Take _____ sachets of Macrogol (Movicol) from ________  days prior to the procedure. Mix each sachet in 125mL water. Do not take any further Macrogol (Movicol) after starting to drink PicoPrep.

Day before procedure:       /      /      

In the morning:

  • Prepare the Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) solution by dissolving the contents of each sachet in one glass of warm water (approx.250ml). If preferred, this can be refrigerated 1-2 hours before you need to drink it.

For breakfast:

  • You may have a light breakfast (low fibre diet).

After breakfast:

  • Do not eat any further solid food. Start drinking clear fluids only

5 pm to 6 pm: 

  • Drink 1st glass of the Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) followed by 1 glass of water and 1 litre of clear fluids.


9 pm - 10 pm:

  • Drink 2nd glass of the Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) followed by 1 glass of water and 1 litre of clear fluids. This extra fluid is to maintain adequate hydration.
  • Sip on clear fluids while you are drinking the Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) to keep you hydrated.

Day of procedure:       /      /      

4 am – 5 am:

  • Drink the final prepared glass of Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) followed by 1 glass of water.
  • You may drink up to 200ml (1 glass) of fluid until 6 am.

At 6 am:

  • Take your usual morning medications with a sip of water at 6 am, unless instructed otherwise.
  • Stop drinking ALL types of fluid.
  • NO Chewing gum or lollies
  • Arrive at the Endoscopy unit, Level 5, Mater Hospital at the time your letter or text message indicates. You should expect to be at the hospital for several hours.

  • 3x 15.5g Sodium Picosulfate Powder (PicoPrep or Picolax) sachets)

Optional:  Macrogol (Movicol )x ___ sachets

Commence Low Fibre Diet (see ‘Colonoscopy – Patient information’ booklet for diet suggestions).
