Bed rest—occupational therapy

Bed RestBeing admitted to hospital with a pregnancy complication can be a stressful, scary and unexpected experience. During your time in hospital you may experience emotional highs and lows. You may feel overwhelmed or anxious about how your pregnancy will progress; you may be worried about things outside of hospital such as your children, family and work; or you may be finding the hours sitting in bed to be frustrating and boring.

You may be wondering how to make the most of your time in hospital and how to have a more positive and rewarding experience. You may also be interested to know how to adapt to your new environment, participate in everyday activities and remain productive, all while on bed rest. A Mater occupational therapist can help you to achieve your goals during your time on bed rest and is available to talk to you and help you through this challenging time.

We have many information sheets and other resources which may help you make the most of the time you spend in hospital.

We also organise a weekly mothers to be session, which you are more than welcome to attend.

Your occupational therapist may discuss the following with you:

  • Bed rest—what is it all about?
  • Dealing with stress
  • Organising your space
  • Coping with boredom
  • Boredom busters
  • Sleeping problems during pregnancy
  • Enhancing your emotional wellbeing
  • Dealing with anxiety and worry
  • How bed rest may affect your thinking
  • Information and tips for family and friends
  • Information and tips for partners
  • Returning home
  • Returning home: side effects of bed rest
  • Returning home: everyday activities after bed rest
  • Recommended websites

In addition to the above information sheets, speak to your occupational therapist about access to other practical resources such as relaxation CDs and books.
